Emoji reactions

Let users respond to any card with one tap. You can even replace the six standard reaction icons with your own SVGs.

Reactions let users respond to any card with a single tap, the same way they do on WhatsApp, Facebook or X. They are one of the lowest-effort ways for people to engage, and every reaction feeds straight into your analytics.

By default, tchop ships with six standard reactions. On a branded app, you can replace the default icons with your own set. You supply the artwork as SVG files, and the tchop team sets them up in your app.

The six standard reactions

tchop uses six reactions, modelled on the set people already know from Facebook:

  • Like

  • Love

  • Haha

  • Wow

  • Sad

  • Angry

Each reaction is a fixed slot with its own meaning. Together they cover a range from positive to negative. This is the set your users tap, and the same set your analytics reports on.

Replacing the icons with your own

You can customise how each reaction looks. To do that, provide one SVG file per reaction: six files in total.

Custom icons change the visual only. The six slots, their order and their underlying meaning stay the same. A custom “Love” icon is still recorded as Love. A custom “Angry” icon is still recorded as Angry. Your tchop contact will confirm the exact export specs (size and format) for your app.

What to consider before you design

The six slots carry meaning, not just artwork. Keep each icon aligned with the reaction it replaces:

  • Match the sentiment. Your “Angry” icon should still read as negative, your “Love” icon as positive. If the artwork drifts from the label, users tap the wrong thing and your data gets noisy.

  • Keep the set consistent. Use one visual style, line weight and level of detail across all six, so they read as a family.

  • Design for small sizes. Reactions appear at a small scale in the feed. Clear silhouettes work better than fine detail.

  • Fit your audience. An internal employee app and a football fan community need a different feel. You can adapt the style and expression to your brand, as long as each icon keeps the meaning of its slot.

  • Use a transparent background and a square canvas so every icon aligns the same way.

Keep reactions aligned with your analytics

Reactions are more than decoration. They are a tracked engagement signal:

  • Reacting to a card counts as engagement, so reactions feed the engaged-users and interaction-rate metrics.

  • Analytics breaks reactions down by type, using the labels Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad and Angry.

  • You see reaction counts per card, per channel and per platform (Android, iOS, web).

  • Removing a reaction is tracked as well.

The label in your analytics follows the slot, not your artwork. If you redesign the “Haha” icon to mean something unrelated to its slot, analytics still reports it as Haha, and your sentiment read becomes misleading. Keep each custom icon true to its slot and your reporting stays accurate.

Best practices

  • Supply all six icons as SVGs, one per slot.

  • Keep a single, consistent style across the set.

  • Test how each icon looks at feed size before you finalise it.

  • Preserve the positive-to-negative range so the set still works as a whole.

  • Keep the meaning of each slot intact so your analytics stays clean.

Summary

Emoji reactions give users a one-tap way to respond, and give you a clean engagement signal. tchop ships with six standard reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, Angry), and on a branded app you can swap the icons for your own SVG set. Keep each custom icon aligned with the meaning of its slot. It protects the user experience and keeps your reaction analytics accurate.
