Google News Integration
Turn a Google News search into a self-filling mix. Ideal for media monitoring, competitor watching and industry news.
Turn a Google News search into a mix that fills itself. Whatever Google News finds for your search term becomes an article card.
This is the one integration where you do not connect an account. You define a topic.
What it does for you
Media monitoring without a monitoring tool. Search for your company name and every mention Google News picks up lands in a mix. Point that mix at an executive channel and you have a clipping service.
Industry news on tap. A search for your sector fills a "What's happening" mix that nobody has to curate by hand.
Competitor watching. One search per competitor, each in its own mix or all in one, whichever your team prefers.
Settings
Google News URL. Run your search on news.google.com, then copy the URL of the results page and paste it in. The search term is carried in that URL, which is why the setting looks like a link rather than a keyword field.
Spend time on the search itself. A term that is too broad delivers a mix full of noise, and a term that is too narrow delivers nothing. Run the search in a browser first, look at what comes back, and refine until the results are what you would want in the feed.
Teaser style. As with YouTube, you can choose how the cards look: standard, small with text, small without text, large without text. News mixes usually read best in a compact style because volume is high.
Mix, name, backfill and auto-publish work as described in How integrations work.
What the cards look like
Google News returns links to articles on publisher sites. Each becomes an article card, built from what the publisher provides: headline, description, image. Tapping the card takes the user to the publisher.
Quality therefore varies with the publisher. A well-maintained news site gives you a clean card. A poorly tagged one gives you a headline and no image.
Limitations
Paywalls. Google News indexes paywalled articles. The card is created, the user taps, and hits the paywall. There is no way to tell in advance which links will be readable, so expect some in any monitoring mix.
No control over the source list. Google decides which publishers appear for your search. You cannot allow or block individual outlets, only refine the search.
Auto-publish deserves a hard think here. This is the source you control least. Anything Google returns goes live if auto-publish is on, including a competitor's press release or a critical article. For monitoring mixes that reach a wide audience, leave it off.
Volume. A broad term can produce dozens of cards a day. Test the search before you connect it.
The usual shared limits apply. Roughly 30 minutes between checks, silent errors, one-time backfill. See the overview page.
Summary
Define a search on news.google.com, paste the URL, and the mix fills with what Google finds. Excellent for monitoring and industry news. Refine the search before you connect it, and think carefully before letting an uncontrolled source publish itself.
