Employee experience

Employee experience is everything a person encounters at work, from application to exit. Which touchpoints matter and where communication fits.

Employee experience is everything a person encounters while working for an organisation, from application to exit. It covers the tools they use, the manager they report to, the physical workplace and the information they receive.

The term groups things that are usually managed separately: HR processes, IT provisioning, facilities and internal communication. Grouping them is the point, because employees experience them as one thing.

What are the main employee experience touchpoints?

Five stages carry most of the impression. Recruitment and offer. Onboarding in the first weeks. Everyday work: tools, information, manager. Development and recognition. And exit.

Onboarding and exit get disproportionate attention because they are discrete projects. Everyday work carries more weight, because it repeats daily for years.

How does employee experience differ from engagement?

Employee experience is the input. Engagement is one of the outputs. Experience describes what the organisation provides; engagement describes how people respond to it.

The practical difference is where you intervene. You cannot instruct people to be engaged. You can fix a broken onboarding, a tool that excludes frontline staff, or a manager who never passes information on.

Where does internal communication fit?

Communication is the connective layer. It is how people learn what is expected, what changed, and what happened to their feedback.

Poor communication shows up as experience problems that look unrelated: a policy nobody knew about, a benefit nobody claimed, a change that surprised a whole site. Where staff have no company email address, communication is often the single weakest touchpoint, because nothing reaches them directly.

How do you measure employee experience?

Use stage-specific measures rather than one score. Ask new starters at 30 and 90 days. Track how long provisioning takes. Measure whether company information reaches each site and shift. And ask leavers what would have changed their decision.

Break results down by role and location. Desk-based and deskless populations usually report different experiences of the same organisation, and an average hides both.

FAQs: Employee experience

What is employee experience in simple terms?

Everything an employee encounters at work, from applying to leaving. Tools, manager, workplace and information all form part of it.

Is employee experience the same as engagement?

No. Experience is what the organisation provides. Engagement is how people respond. You change engagement by changing experience.

Who owns employee experience?

Usually HR, working with IT, facilities and internal communication. It spans functions, which is why it needs one named owner.

What is the most overlooked touchpoint?

Everyday information. It repeats daily and is frequently broken for staff without a company email address.
