About AOK

About AOK

Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK) is one of the largest statutory health insurance providers in Germany, covering over 27 million policyholders, which equates to roughly 27% of the market. With more than 130 years of history, AOK plays a crucial role in Germany’s healthcare infrastructure, adhering to the highest safety standards and certifications to ensure the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.

In Germany, where statutory health insurance is mandatory, AOK guarantees millions of employees access to secure, regulated healthcare services.

The AOK system is highly decentralised, consisting of eleven legally independent, regional health insurance funds that operate autonomously, including their communication strategies.

Currently, tchop™ supports four of these health insurance funds, with two more set to join in 2025. Each organisation has unique goals, challenges, content needs, and IT solutions, coordinated through the AOK's exclusive partner for internal communications, KomPart Publishing Company, which is part of the AOK media group.

With the rise of remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all AOK health insurance companies faced the challenge of efficiently reaching employees who were no longer working in the office. The traditional print magazine, once a key tool for employee communication, became less effective and was discontinued in many cases. As a result, AOK needed a new, digital communication platform.

AOK sought a modern, secure platform that offered both mobile apps and a digital front-door intranet in the brand's look and feel. The mobile channel was increasingly seen as essential, given that existing intranet solutions didn’t offer a suitable solution. Additionally, AOK’s status as part of Germany's critical infrastructure, due to the vast number of people insured, added an extra layer of complexity. The health insurance provider needed a platform that adhered to stringent security and compliance regulations, ensuring that the system was not only user-friendly but also met the highest standards of data protection and privacy.

During their search, AOK found that many providers were too expensive and often too inflexible to meet the diverse requirements of the various AOKs. The platform needed to accommodate a large number of employees while maintaining high standards for both content and user experience. Internal communication at AOK had to align with strict corporate identity guidelines, similar to their external communications, but many platforms offered limited customisation options beyond basic colour and logo changes.

The various AOK regions each had different needs and challenges. While AOK Lower Saxony prioritised developing an employee app, AOK Plus focused on implementing a new front-door intranet. Some AOK divisions aimed to build a "social intranet," whereas others concentrated on creating modern, multimedia corporate communication with interactive community elements. In close collaboration with KomPart, tchop™ was able to develop and implement tailored solutions for each AOK division while maintaining a unified platform. Nevertheless, the focus was on a uniform, overarching platform that can be further developed together and from which all organisations benefit.

Despite this, the process for each AOK took, on average, just six months from project initiation to app launch. All apps were introduced within the agreed timeline, a testament to the effective teamwork of all parties involved.
